Why did I make this?
There have been tutorials on how to save your own Kinja posts but there are no plans to save all of it, which concerns me as I like preservation (or more specifically I hate the dread of permanently lost content). I have my own posts which I’ve already read through dozens of times while writing (and yet without fail I always discover a new typo when re-reading an old post), but what about other people’s posts? All the great posts and comments that I’ll never be able to read again. And what about those Opponauts who’ve left us, and don’t know about the potential shutdown and never got to archive their work? That depresses me.
I’m clueless with any sort of technical computer stuff, and it would probably be too much to ask to upload it all to Wayback Machine, but I did find something called the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a group of Internet archivists. They seem to know what they’re doing, they archived the entirety of Google+ for instance, in a bunch of code and text files on GitHub that I have no idea how to use, but it’s better than nothing.
They’ve had Kinja as a potential future project on their !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for a while, from the previous Kinjapocalypse. I’ve contacted and notified them of the impending shutdown, and I think they’ve said they did some stuff from last time and they’ll look into it. They have some confusing one-time chat system thingy so I’m not sure about updates, but fingers crossed all the stuff won’t be lost to the ether. Still, maybe there are other archivists out there we could ask, just in case?

Rory from Jalopnik is trying to talk to the devs to see if there is a way we can transfer things over, so we’re hoping he can help with that. Otherwise, there is a pinned post on the Oppo Discord and a few posts here on saving individual articles from the Kinjaverse, so maybe that wil
l help you a bit at least?

I started to do some POC to do so, to have something basic.
So far i think it won’t be much of a problem to have the posts but the comments will be more annoying if required.

I’ve saved all my posts, but that’s really most of the Oppo content I’ll be able to reread later. I’m worried about all those who haven’t saved their posts, especially the long, high-effort ones.

Seems Rory from Jalopnik is trying his best to see if there is a way to transition things, but yeah...looks like we might lose a LOT of content...

I have the same sentiment. It’s not just that many long form posts are going to get wiped anyways and lost amid the shuffle, this is a continuous record of nearly everything interesting that has happened in and around cars for nearly a decade that is going to be wiped. It’s an important artifact that cannot be replicated.
Especi ally with the sitemap feature, it’s a time capsule all on its own. I would hate to see archives miss it. Of course there's a crap ton of files and comments wouldn't be preserved but it is so much better than having it become lost to living memory.

Thanks for checking in on that. It’d be nice to be able to keep the comments as well.

I have SO MANY long posts on Oppo in my ‘to read later’ list. And it’s not just a forgotten bookmark, I actually go through a lot of the content people wrote here. Seems like I won’t be able to see a lot of it. I’m so incredibly sad about this whole thing...

If only I could be as resilient with my dozens of bookmarks and tabs.

A previous effort was made by some folks at Reddit’s /r/datahoarder , and it might be worth asking there again. It’s home to some folks with serious enterprise level storage space, but more importantly people who would be able to accurately scrape all content to preserve full context. This would make it easier to pull previous articles and comments should a new home pop up.

I posted to the subreddit, and messaged the person in the linked thread of any progress with their archive, thanks for letting me know.
